J.J. Abrams released a short video this morning showing bits of the Star Wars set in Abu Dhabi, spruiking UNICEF and what-not. Bu J.J. is upstaged by the coolest puppeteered character I’ve seen in a while.
I’m SOO glad to see this. I despise episodes I, II and III for their tragic overuse of CGI to create characters that had no gravity or depth – odd animations that felt out of place with the live action.
Rewatching the original trilogy on May 4, I was reminded how much more real the characters feel when they are physically on the set, and how great lighting, cinematography and sound design can bring so much life to these strange characters. I would take puppet Yoda over CGI-lightsaber Yoda any day.
So far so good J.J. Abrams. Keep it up.
