A week’s break from Uni was enough time for me to get out of town, and into some trees. Here’s a gorgeous strangler fig tree in the process of entrapping it’s ‘host’…

I reckon they look like something straight out of Aliens. Contrary to popular belief, stranger figs don’t directly kill the tree they attach to. Instead, they use the tree’s trunk to climb towards the canopy, competing with the tree for light. Sometime in the distant future the tree in the middle will die from being ‘out-competed’, leaving a hollow but very much alive fig tree shell.

Sucks to be the other tree.
