In Hope’s Arms was a feature-length film about a kid who’s mother was brutally killed in a domestic violence incident with his father. That said, it’s a also a heart-warming story about a kid with no friends finding a friend for life. It was finished in (I think) 2004… good times. Best of all, it featured a score by yours truly – my 2nd feature length score – and you can download ‘most’ of it for usage under my fandangled creative commons license!
It was a weird film to score, because beneath what seemed like a cute little children’s story was a dark evil heart of depression and sadness. I don’t know if I was ever impressed with the music I wrote in the end, as it sometimes worked rather disjointedly with the picture. But, on it’s own it seems fine enough – for the most part, the music is rather light, bouncy and cute, with a few darker swelling moments which you will definitely here in the track ‘Desperation’. The score also features a lot of recorder, as I felt it resembled a naivety of a child dealing with terrible circumstances, and helped moderate the mood a bit. Plus, having the occasional real instrument aided with the realism, considering the rest of the score was created using sample libraries (mostly EWQL Gold).
‘Welcome to my Junkyard’ reminds me of John William’s ET score for some reason, and not because it’s amazingly well orchestrated – I guess it just has that flighty feel to it. ‘High Games’ and ‘Quirky Lane’ are cute little tracks, with bouncy winds and vibes playing around each other with various rhythmic devices. ‘Special Ops’ carries on with that theme, culminating in a semi-rousing swell at the end. ‘Desperation’ is somewhat dark, but ends on an uplifting note, which is finished with ‘New Beginnings’, which ends the film and is supposed to feel like there is hope, even after everything’s hit the fan.
This selection is pretty much the latter half of the score; the beginning was fairly ‘meh’, so I chose not to make them available. Hopefully you all can find some useful music amongst these tracks – and let me know if you use any of them too… I love seeing what people do with my music!
